Lifelong sailor, uncompromising architect, husband, and father of three boys, Roland “Rody” Davies passed away on August 9, 2017, while working on his sailboat. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of 56 years, his three sons, and four grandchildren.

Rody was born in Washington, D.C. on July 26, 1932. He graduated from Landon in 1951, and Washington & Lee in 1955 where he played soccer and lacrosse. He served on the USS Valley Forge while in the Navy, and started his studies in Architecture at UVA, finishing with a masters at the University of Pennsylvania.

After graduating in 1961, he stayed in Philadelphia where he started his own architectural firm, working out of his office on Strawberry Street, in Old City. He served on numerous boards, and fought to preserve the historic buildings of his neighborhood, Society Hill, and Philadelphia at large. After 40 years of living in Philadelphia he moved back to Sherwood Forest, Md., to ‘Treetops’, his summer home since childhood, and one of his first architectural projects. He was a current member of the AIA, and was still drawing at his boards at age 85. He loved nature, the Severn River, the ospreys flying over his boat, and all of the pets he adopted over his long life. His grandkids will never forget Pop-pop, his love of the Sunday Funnies, the boat rides, and of course, his parrot, Henrietta, who passed away just a year ago.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Severn River Association.
